When to Go to the Emergency Room Instead

Go to the nearest emergency room or call 911 if you or someone with you has:

  • Back pain following a serious accident or significant fall
  • Loss of bladder or bowel control alongside back pain (call 911)
  • Severe back pain with high fever
  • Progressive leg weakness or numbness

If you are unsure, go to the ER. It is always better to be safe.
