Tonsillitis is inflammation of the tonsils, most commonly caused by a viral or bacterial infection. Bacterial tonsillitis often caused by Group A Strep requires antibiotic treatment. At Reddy Urgent Care, we assess and treat tonsillitis the same day with on-site rapid strep testing.

Types Of Tonsillitis We Treat
- Viral tonsillitis
Caused by common cold viruses or mono. Clears with rest and symptom care.
- Bacterial tonsillitis (strep)
Caused by Group A Strep. Requires antibiotic treatment.
- Mono-related tonsillitis
Mononucleosis can cause severe tonsil swelling — rapid mono test available.
- Recurrent tonsillitis
Frequent infections may warrant ENT specialist referral.
When to Go to the Emergency Room Instead
Go to the nearest emergency room or call 911 if you or someone with you has:
- Tonsils so swollen they are touching each other
- Difficulty breathing or drooling
- Severe neck stiffness
- Symptoms of peritonsillar abscess (severe one-sided pain, muffled voice)
If you are unsure, go to the ER. It is always better to be safe.
