When to Go to the Emergency Room Instead

Go to the nearest emergency room or call 911 if you or someone with you has:

  • Tonsils so swollen they are touching each other

  • Severe neck stiffness
  • Symptoms of peritonsillar abscess (severe one-sided pain, muffled voice)

If you are unsure, go to the ER. It is always better to be safe.
