An EKG, also known as an electrocardiogram or ECG, is a diagnostic tool used to check for signs of heart disease. It does this by recording the electrical signals of the heart via electrodes that are placed onto the skin. EKGs have helped countless patients determine the health of their heart and are commonly used in preventative medicine. An EKG may be ordered by your physician if you are experiencing any number of symptoms related to heart disease.

An electrocardiogram (EKG) records the heart’s electrical activity. It provides information about heart rate and rhythm, and detects signs of high blood pressure (hypertension) or evidence of a previous heart attack (myocardial infarction). However, it cannot detect asymptomatic blockages in heart arteries or predict the risk of a heart attack from occurring in the future. An EKG test may be ordered if you have high blood pressure or other risk factors for heart disease, or if you are experiencing symptoms such as heart palpitations or chest pain. An EKG may also be recommended if you already have heart disease. In addition to electrical activity and rhythm, an EKG can also reveal if the heart is receiving enough oxygen and prevents ischemia, a dangerous state in which the cardiac tissues do not have an adequate supply of oxygenated blood.
There are many reasons why a person might need to have an EKG. The three main reasons are:
• To evaluate heart-related problems, such as shortness of breath, fainting, severe tiredness or dizziness
• To identify irregular heartbeats
• To determine the overall health of the heart
An EKG may be performed before a procedure or surgery, after treatment for conditions such as a heart attack and endocarditis, or after cardiac catheterization or heart surgery.
There may be other reasons to perform an EKG, including:
• To see how an implanted pacemaker is working
• To look for the cause of chest pain
• To determine the efficacy of heart medicines
• To get a baseline of the heart’s function
EKGs may be carried out during a physical exam or before a procedure to use as a comparison with future EKGs. These pre-emptive tests are used to determine if any changes take place after receiving treatment and are useful tools for tracking a patient’s health history.
